Old vs New Tax Regime Calculator
Compare ordinary salary-income tax under both regimes using one versioned rules engine.
This is a numerical comparison, not personal tax advice.
1 assumption / scope note
- Professional tax is not deducted when computing total income under section 202 new regime.
Both calculations use the same versioned Tax Year rules.
How this calculator works
What it does
This calculator runs the same salary inputs through the supported old- and new-regime tax logic for Tax Year 2026–27. Its purpose is comparison: the user can see how deductions and slab structures affect the estimated tax instead of relying on a generic claim that one regime is always better.
Calculation
Both scenarios use SalaryPath's versioned tax engine. The new regime applies its own standard deduction and slab structure. The old regime applies its standard deduction plus supported old-regime items entered by the user. Each side then calculates slab tax, supported rebate or marginal relief and cess.
Example
Example: a salaried employee with meaningful HRA and Chapter VI-A deductions can enter those old-regime amounts and compare the resulting tax with the new regime using the same gross salary. A user with few deductions can test the opposite case without changing calculators.
Before relying on it
The comparison is only as accurate as the inputs and supported scope. Special-rate income, surcharge cases, business income and deductions not represented by the calculator can change the real return-level answer. Use the result as a salary-tax comparison, not a filing recommendation.
Useful for
- Compare tax before submitting employer declarations
- Test the value of old-regime deductions
- Understand why a regime switch changes taxable income
